Varnes named Bulldog of the Week

PERKINSTON — Landon Varnes and Linda Mustered have been named Bulldogs of the Week for Sept. 22-28. 

Varnes, a sophomore quarterback from Brandon, threw for 262 yards and four touchdowns in No. 4 Gulf Coast's 42-28 win at archrival Pearl River. Varnes leads the NJCAA in yards per game (310 ypg), touchdowns (16) and passing efficiency (200.8).

Mustered, a sophomore forward from Biloxi, had a hat trick in an 8-0 win over East Central during a 2-0 week for the No. 12 Bulldogs.

Willie Breland, a sophomore defensive back from Wiggins, was a ballhawk in No. 4 Gulf Coast's 42-28 win at archrival Pearl River. He had a fumble recovery and an interception, taking the latter back for an apparent touchdown before a penalty on the return. 

Laurel Conley, a sophomore from Ocean Springs, had three saves for No. 12 Gulf Coast in a 4-1 win at Southwest Mississippi.

Xavier Ezell, a sophomore keeper from Starkville, had four saves in Gulf Coast's 7-2 win at Southwest.

Malorie Gaughf, a freshman middle blocker from Gulfport, had 25 kills and eight blocks during a 2-0 week for Gulf Coast.

Aiden Guinn, a freshman kicker from Wiggins, was perfect on his attempts in No. 4 Gulf Coast's 42-28 win at archrival Pearl River. He made both his field goal attempts, including a 34-yarder, and all four extra points. Guinn had three touchbacks on eight kickoffs.

Paul Hoefer, a freshman from Heidelberg, Germany, finished in third place at the Tiger Invitational in Corinth. He shot 9-under during 36-hole event.

Alexander Mink, a sophomore from Long Beach, had his second hat trick of the season in a 7-2 win at Southwest. 

Reese Sorrells, a freshman opposite hitter from Picayune, had nine total blocks and 20 kills in a 2-0 week for Gulf Coast.
