Laiche, Mills named Bulldogs of the Week

PERKINSTON — Madison Laiche and John Mark Mills have been named Bulldogs of the Week for April 21-27.

Laiche, a freshman lefty from Luling, La., went 1-1 for the Bulldogs last week, beating East Central 9-1 with a six-hitter. She threw a three-hitter at Holmes but lost 1-0.

Mills, a sophomore from Pontotoc, finished second at the NJCAA Gulf District Championship in Tunica, leading the Bulldogs to their fifth straight district title. He finished 7-under in the 54-hole event. Gulf Coast has won 16 of the past 17 region/district championships.

Also nominated:

Jordan Davis, a freshman outfielder from Neshoba, batted .545 with three doubles, one of them driving in two runs in the ninth to beat No. 6 East Central at Decatur. Gulf Coast went 3-1 during the week, and Davis drove in four runs and scored five times. He walked five times to soar to a .722 on-base percentage.

Abby Lindsey, a freshman from Decatur, Ala., batted .636 with two doubles during a 2-2 week for Mississippi Gulf Coast. She had hits in all four games, including a three-hit performance in the second game at Holmes.

Moritz Stroebel, a freshman from Metzingen, Germany, won four matches during No. 15 Gulf Coast's run to the NJCAA Region 23 runner-up finish. He won a pair of No. 1 doubles matches with Vicente Faria, as well as two No. 3 singles matches.

James Vines, a freshman from Clinton, La., went 1-0 with a save for Mississippi Gulf Coast. He got the last two outs of a 4-3 win at East Central on Thursday, then struck out six and scattered five hits in a six-inning start to beat Holmes 9-2.
