Ed Evans, Class of 2008

Evans lettered in football for four years at Perkinston Agricultural High School, and he lettered in football for two years at Perkinston Junior College. He was certainly one of the few players, if not the only player, to letter six years in football at Perk.

He also played baseball, basketball, and ran track. He was twice named All-State First Team in football. He was a member of Perk’s 1948 state and co-national championship football team, and he was co-captain of the 1949 football team.

He played first-string end for two years on the Mississippi State College football team. After that he played one year of service football at Fort Jackson, S.C.

Evans returned to Perkinston and began coaching in 1956. In 1959, he became the head football coach and hired Bobby Holmes as backfield coach. When Holmes left in 1961, Evans replaced him with George Sekul.

In December 1961 Evans served as line coach of the East squad that defeated the West squad in the All-American Junior College Bowl at Albuquerque, N.M.

Evans left coaching in 1962 to begin a career as an administrator. Evans retired from MGCCC in 1991.

He was a member of the inaugural class of MGCCC’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. In 1996 the MGCCC Alumni Association awarded Evans the Sam Owen Trophy Award for service to the college.
