Bio

Helen Bond Maples

Perkinston Junior College (1947-1949) / Basketball, Tennis
Saucier, Mississippi

Helen Bond, a native of Saucier and graduate of Success High School, achieved All-State honors during both her junior college seasons (1947-48, 1948-49). She was also named to the All-Star squad for her performance in the Women’s State Championship Basketball Tournament held in the Old Gym Feb. 18-21, 1948. Likewise, she was named All-Tournament for ability displayed in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Coast Tournament of 1949.

Bond’s recognitions at Perk include being named Best Girl Athlete both years she attended the school. She also played varsity tennis and intramural badminton and served as vice president of the Women’s Athletic Board.

Following graduation from Perk, she turned down a Southern Amateur Athletic Union offer to play on a semi-pro basketball tour of Central America, electing instead to pursue a teaching certificate that summer at Mississippi Southern College in Hattiesburg. She taught and coached basketball for two years at Vancleave High School.
