William Charles "Flopy" Boone

"Flopy" Boone, born in Hattiesburg February 4, 1932, graduated from Biloxi High School and entered Perkinston Junior College in fall 1950. In his two years at Perk, he played football, basketball, baseball, and ran track. Named Most Athletic man in 1952, Boone made his greatest athletic contribution to Perk in the realm of basketball, where he played center and led the team in scoring both years he played. From Perk, Boone went to Livingston (Alabama) State College, where he played baseball and basketball. As he had at Perk, Boone led the Livingston basketball team in scoring both years. After graduating in 1954, he served two years in the United States Army. Honorably discharged in 1956, he entered Mississippi Southern College in Hattiesburg, earning his master's degree in June 1957. He immediately began his coaching/teaching career at Quitman High School, serving as mentor in all sports for both girls and boys. He was named Choctaw Conference Coach of the Year in several sports. Boone was inducted into the Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame in 1992. Following his coaching career, Boone served as principal at Quitman High School from 1969 to 1981. Elected Clarke County Superintendent of Education, he held that position for a decade until his retirement in 1991. In recognition of his contributions to the athletic, educational, and religious life of his community, he was selected to carry the Olympic Torch in Mississippi in 1996. In 2000, Boone completed 17 years as a member of the Jones County Junior College Board of Trustees.
