James Obie Brown

Brown earned a total of eight varsity letters in football, baseball, basketball, and track. In his first year, he was selected for the State All-Junior College First Team in basketball, and in his second year, he was named the college's Best All-Around Athlete. A member of both the South Division and state baseball championship teams of 1931 and 1932, Brown played first base and right field. Brown continued his athletic career at Mississippi State Teacher's College in Hattiesburg and then began a coaching career lasting from 1934-1951. From 1939- 1942, he returned to Perkinston, where he was assistant football, basketball, and track coach under head coach Albert I. Rexinger. In his years as head coach at five Mississippi high schools, he never had a losing season while coaching football, basketball, baseball, and track. In 1978, Brown was inducted into the Mississippi Coaches Hall of Fame. From 1951 until his retirement in 1979, Brown served Natchez and Adams County as a school administrator.
