Matt D'Angelo

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (2000-02) / Tennis
Gulfport, Mississippi

Matt D’Angelo dominated the state tennis scene in his two seasons at Gulf Coast. He won No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles MACJC and NJCAA Region 23 championships both years.

He arrived at Gulf Coast after having won back-to-back Class 2A state singles championships for St. John in 1999-2000. His first season as a Bulldog was just as prolific.

He didn’t lose a match in MACJC play, going 15-1 overall at No. 1 singles. He beat Northeast’s Joshua Bryan 6-2, 6-1 to win in singles at the MACJC/Region 23 Tournament in Ellisville. Teamed with fellow freshman Tyler Rosen of Gulfport, D’Angelo picked the doubles titles by beat Bryan and Drew Clemon 7-5, 5-7, 6-1. A Bulldog team depleted by some mid-year attrition finishes sixth in the tournament.

D'Angelo’s wins earned him a trip to the NJCAA Tournament in Tyler, Texas. He beat Chattanooga Tech’s Hunter Benton 6-3, 6-2 in the opening round before falling to 13th-seeded Louis Moris of Laredo. D’Angelo finished the season ranked 35th in the ITA rankings, up 13 spots from where he started.

D’Angelo and Rosen lost their opening-round double match but advanced to the finals of the consolation bracket.

D’Angelo repeated his No. 1 sweep as a sophomore in 2002, beating Itawamba’s Daniel Bustamante 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 for the No. 1 singles championship. Teamed with Chad Sullivan at No. 1 doubles, they beat Bustamante and Jorge Zabrodiec 6-2, 6-1 for the title. Gulf Coast was MACJC co-champion with Itawamba after a 12-5 regular season. Gulf Coast and ICC were Region 23 runners-up to Meridian.

D’Angelo was named All-Region for his performance, which again earned him a trip to the NJCAA Tournament in Plano, Texas.
