Bio

Leon Glenn Davis

Perkinston Agricultural High School &  Junior College (1949-1951) \ Basketball, Baseball
Elba, Alabama

Leon G. Davis of Elba, Ala., attended Perkinston Junior College 1949-51, lettering in both basketball and baseball. He played basketball so well in 1951 that he earned All-State laurels.

Also in 1951, Davis received the Dr. D.H. Hollis Trophy, a coveted prize that went to the sophomore athlete who “has done the most to advance and promote the best interests of good student conduct and welfare and promoting athletics and thereby has set an example that other students may emulate and follow.”

Davis won the counterpart to the Hollis Trophy at Troy State in Alabama. He then spent 36 years imbuing thousands of students with those ideals. Twenty-eight of those years were spent at the University of Montevallo (formerly Alabama College), where he established the sports program from scratch and where the Leon G. Davis Trophy is now awarded annually to an athlete for precisely the same reasons Perkinston awarded Davis the Hollis Trophy in 1951.

Davis’ awards and achievements include a doctorate in education from the University of Alabama and induction into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame.
