Bio

William "Bill" Dooley

Perkinston Junior College (1952-1954) / Football
Mobile, Alabama

William “Bill” Dooley, an all-state gridiron star who attended Perkinston Junior College from September 1952 to January 1954, went on to achieve acclaim as a college football coach. While at Perk, he lettered in football in 1952 and 1953, and in track in 1953, when he was a member of the state championship track team (he threw discus and shot put). He was a guard in the Laurel Lions Bowl of 1953, in which Perk tied Co-Lin 6-6 (both teams received a trophy).

In a 26-year career that saw more than 160 victories, the Mobile native was head coach at North Carolina (1967-77), Virginia Tech (1978-86) and Wake Forest (1987-1992). A three-time Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year, he led UNC and Virginia Tech as the all-time winningest coach at both schools, and took Wake Forest to its first bowl game in 14 years. He was a long-time director of Sports Development for the North Carolina Department of Commerce and worked with Jefferson Pilot TV Sports and the Blue-Gray All-Star Classic.
