Bio
Robert Earl Elam
Perkinston Agricultural High School & Junior College (1953-1954) / Football
Pascagoula, Mississippi
In September 1953, Coach Harold “War Daddy” White recruited Elam as a quarterback on the Perkinston Junior College football team. The 1953 team turned in a very respectable seven wins, three losses, and one tie season. The tie against Co-Lin on December 5, 1953, in the Laurel Lions Bowl yielded War Daddy White’s only football trophy and each member of the team received a wristwatch. Elam had much more playing time in the 1954 season and proved his mettle. He and end Eddie Khayat became a formidable duo. At season’s end, Elam won All-State Second Team Honors, and Coach White designated him as “Best All-Around Athlete.” As in high school, Elam earned letters in football, basketball, and baseball. After Perkinston, Elam attended Memphis State on a football scholarship. Two years later the army drafted him. Following his service, he returned to Pascagoula and worked for Morton Thiokol until his retirement.
