Matt Hungerman

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (2006-08) / Golf
Mandeville, Louisiana

Matt Hungerman of Mandeville was part of a team that helped launch an era of Gulf Coast dominance in golf. He was the medalist on the Bulldogs’ 2008 National Junior College Athletic Association Region 23 championship squad, the first in a run of winning 12 out of the next 13 region/district titles that continues to this day.

In his freshman season at Gulf Coast, Hungerman won the Hinds Eagle Spring Invitational tournament and the Bulldogs won the event by four shots over the hosts. He also finished seventh at the Northwest Shoals Fall Invitational in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and would go on to win All-MACJC Second Team Honors.

He won two more tournaments as a sophomore, winning the event at Forest Country Club to pace a 17-shot Gulf Coast victory. Hungerman’s biggest victory that year came at the MACJC/NJCAA Region 23 Tournament. He won medalist to help the Bulldogs claim Coach Tommy Snell’s first region championship.

Gulf Coast would finish 13th at the NJCAA Division II Golf Championship in Phoenix, Arizona.

As a sophomore, all 30 of his rounds counted toward the team score. Hungerman earned PING All-Region honors, and he finished runner-up to teammate Stone Thames for the Hubert Tucker Award, given to the golfer with the lowest scoring average in conference event. That earned him a spot on the All-MACJC First Team.

Hungerman is tied for seventh in Gulf Coast history with three tournament wins.
