Ezzard Charles Jones

Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College (1969-71)
Moss Point, Miss.

Ezzard Charles “Shotgun” Jones of Moss Point played for the Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College basketball team from 1969-1971. He was a starter and integral part of Coach Bob Weathers’ 1970 basketball team that won the second of back-to-back South Division Championships and State Championships. During his second season, in 1971, the team finished with a 23-5 record and played in the State Championship tournament.

In 1971, Jones was named co-captain (along with Billy Gordon) and averaged 20 points and 17 rebounds while earning All-State honors. Jones helped to lead the team back to the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior College (MACJC) State Championship tournament that year.

Jones transferred to Southeastern Louisiana University (SELU) and was a starter on the basketball team during both his junior and senior years, averaging double digits in points and rebounds. He received numerous awards, including Most Valuable Player, and was selected Gulf South Conference Player of the Year. Jones led SELU to a Gulf South Conference Championship and the NCAA College Playoffs.

After finishing his bachelor’s degree, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and received numerous achievement awards and commendations over a 20-year career. He was selected for a special duty assignment during the Gulf War in support of Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm.

After retiring from active duty, he went back to work for the military working with the Air Force Security Forces. He currently lives in Georgia with his wife, Dr. Violet Jones.
