Bio

Douglas Wayne Morrison

Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College (1977-1979) / Baseball
Ocean Springs, Mississippi

Douglas Morrison’s first year at Mississippi Gulf Coast was in 1978 and he won four games and lost one. This record was sufficient to earn him a letter in baseball and brought him to the direct attention of Coach Curly Farris. At the beginning of his sophomore year, Farris put him in as a starter, together with Dale Chatham of Biloxi.

Two-man teams are not unheard of in Gulf Coast sports, but the Morrison-Chatham connection became so pronounced that the two men were dubbed “Magicians of the Mound” by sportscasters.  As Curly Farris put it, “They are my one-two punch. Dale will pitch the first game, and Doug the second.” In late April 1979 the Bulldogs won the south division championship, and Perkinston was named as the site of the state championship.

On Saturday, May 5, 1979, Dale Chatham and Doug Morrison annihilated North division champion East Mississippi with double no-hitters which nailed Curly Farris’s eleventh state championship for Gulf Coast.

Following state laurels, the Bulldogs went on to win the National Junior College Athletic Association Region VII championship and then were eliminated in the NJCAA Eastern District contest. At season’s end, Morrison was named to the All-State and the All-Region VII junior college teams. And, in addition, he was named to the All-Eastern Tournament Honorable Mention team.

After graduation from Gulf Coast on May 13, 1979, Morrison went to the University of South Alabama where he played baseball and majored in the medical field. After college, he played one summer for the Clarinda Iowa A’s.
