Brittany Nulta Castille

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (2006-2008) / Women’s Tennis
Moss Point, Miss.

Brittany Nulta Castille of Moss Point played on the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College tennis team during her freshman and sophomore years. She was instrumental in both the 2007 and 2008 women’ s teams qualifying for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championships. During those two spring seasons, Castille anchored a team of women players who were all from Jackson County. She was voted Most Improved Player her freshman year and Most Valuable Player her sophomore year.

Gary Bourgeois, former MGCCC tennis coach, said that Castille was a leader on and off the court and won some key matches in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior College (MACJC) Championships as well as the Region 23 championships, which qualified the team for the NJCAA National Championship.

“Brittany played No. 4 singles her freshman year, but was moved to No. 1 singles and doubles her sophomore year. She led us to a third-place finish for MACJC/Region 23 during her freshman year and a second-place finish her sophomore year. Brittany was a shy leader leading by example on and off the court.”

The tennis team was located on the current Harrison County Campus during the years Castille played. Along with her Jackson County teammates, Castille had to drive to Gulfport every day for practice then return home to do homework. This was especially difficult after long road trips for away games, but Castille maintained a 3.5 or above grade point average during all four semesters she played for the Bulldogs. Bourgeois said her personality and general caring about her teammates forged a chemistry that led the team to two tremendous seasons.

“She was the glue that kept our team dreams and goals alive,” he said. “In the semifinals of the Region 23 Championships during her sophomore year and on what was an extremely hot day, we had three of our players cramp up, with Brittany being one of them. We were losing all three matches. After giving them all fluids on the courts, Brittany made an incredible comeback, winning her match. What she did motivated our other two players, who also came back to win their matches. It was an outstanding day, with Brittany leading the way and serving as an inspiration to her teammates.”
