Bio

Carrol “Butch” Raley

Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College (1967-1969) / Baseball
Biloxi, Mississippi

In fall 1967, Curly Farris recruited Butch Raley as a catcher. Raley was at catcher when the Bulldogs clobbered the Northwest Rangers at Biloxi’s Lee Street Diamond on May 11, 1968, in what was to be the first of three games to decide the Mississippi Association of Junior Colleges championship. Since Northwest forfeited the next two games due to rain, the Bulldogs took a third consecutive state championship. The Bulldogs ended the season with the finest baseball record in Perkinston’s history to that time (16-3) and Raley batted .300. In 1969 the Bulldog team won South Division for the seventh time in a row. On May 5, 1969, the Bulldogs went against Mississippi Delta at Perkinston for the state championship. In this game, Raley singled and then scored on a double by Jay McCormick. After this game Farris took his team to the National Junior Athletic Association Eastern District Tournament held May 14-16, 1969, at Louisberg, North Carolina. Although the Bulldogs lost, this was the first time a Mississippi Junior College team played in an NJCAA Eastern District Tournament. Raley and two other Bulldogs were named to the NJCAA East District Junior College Team.
