Bio

Frances Lorette (Rouse) Compton

Perkinston Agricultural High School &  Junior College (1946-1948) / Basketball, Tennis, Pep Squad

Lorette Rouse Compton played basketball in an era when shimmering satin jerseys were the fad and six teammates played on the court. Compton came to Perkinston in 1946 to play basketball on a work scholarship.

The word "gamer" might be the best way to describe Compton. She made a habit leading come-from-behind victories in division play. She was selected Mississippi Association of Junior Colleges All-State in 1947.

During the state playoffs, Compton always took her game to a higher level. She was selected as an All-Star in both the 1947 and 1948 state tournament. Her last game as a "Perk-Girl" came in the 1948 state championship game. Her team would fall but not before Compton poured in half of the team's points.

She was also the vice president of the Wesley Foundation and secretary of the Athletic Board. She also remained busy in the YWCA, Drama Club and the Pep Squad. After leaving college, Compton continued playing basketball in several amateur leagues. She married Thomas Compton in 1950 and had six children. Her love of basketball has never faded, and she played until age 70.
