Bio

Stacie Davis

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (1995-1997)
Mobile, Ala.

Stacie Davis was a dominant rebounder who helped lead Gulf Coast to an MACCC South title and an NJCAA All-American spot as a sophomore.

Davis was a 5-foot-10 forward who played at LeFlore High School in Mobile, Ala. She made an immediate impact as a Bulldog starting in 1995, averaging 11.7 points as a freshman when she helped lead Gulf Coast to a 13-12 record. It was the women’s basketball team’s first winning season since 1988.

Her sophomore season of 1995-96 saw her become an even more important cog in the Gulf Coast machine. Davis opened the season with a dominating 32-point, 18-rebound performance in an 82-70 win over Delgado in New Orleans. She also had four assists and two steals.

On Nov. 26, she had 20 points and 11 rebounds in an 86-67 win over Mississippi Delta in the Pearl River Classic. She injured her knee against Pearl River in mid-December after having already scored 16 points in a loss. She was averaging more than 21 points a game, but she returned to the lineup after Christmas.

On Jan. 7, Davis scored 12 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in a 72-69 win over East Central. It was the Bulldogs’ 10th win in the first 15 games of the season, moving them to 2-2 in the South.

On Jan. 9, Davis scored 19 points with eight rebounds in an 83-76 overtime loss to Copiah-Lincoln. The next week, she had 17 points in a 68-58. Gulf Coast’s stingy man defense led to a 41-14 halftime lead.

Davis had a double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds in a 72-65 win over Southwest Mississippi on Jan. 23. The next week, she led Gulf Coast with 18 points in an 89-64 loss to East Central in Decatur.

In the MACCC South Tournament, Davis had 12 points to help lead Gulf Coast to a 71-56 win over Hinds in Wesson. The Bulldogs beat Copiah-Lincoln 86-80 in a double-overtime thriller to clinch the MACJC South title. Davis led the Bulldogs with 11 rebounds.

Davis had a game-high 38 points in an 88-74 loss to Northeast Mississippi in the first round of the MACJC Tournament.

In the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament in Clinton, Davis hit the game-winner with three seconds left to beat Delgado 81-80 in a first-round matchup of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament in Clinton. It avenged a 71-67 loss to the Dolphins in the last regular-season game which had seen Davis score 17 points.

Gulf Coast swamped Northeast Mississippi 76-43 in the semifinals, with Davis scoring 12 points. No. 16 Co-Lin ended Gulf Coast’s season in the championship game, topping the Bulldogs 76-55. Davis finished with 12 points after the Wolves focused their aggressive defense on her.

Gulf Coast finished 21-11 and Davis was named to the All-MACJC Team. She became the women’s basketball program’s first All-American when she was named an NJCAA Honorable Mention recipient.

Davis went on to play two seasons at McNeese State. She tied for the team lead in scoring as a junior, averaging 12.2 points per game. She shot better than 56 percent from the field and led the team with 6.0 rebounds per game. Her efforts earned her the team’s Most Valuable Player and Newcomer awards.

In the 1998-99 season, she won the team’s Rebound Award. She started all 26 games, scoring 10.7 points with 5.9 rebounds, both second-best on the team.

After graduation, Davis pursued a career in nursing.
