Wendell Weathers attended Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College from June 1976-May 1978. He graduated on May 10, 1978. In 1977, he was a member of the Mississippi Association of Junior Colleges South Division championship team and in 1978 was a member of the state championship team. He was selected All-State and State Most Valuable Player in 1978. In 2013, he still held the record for most assists in a single game and single season.

He served as a graduate assistant coach at Delta State University, coach at Buras (Louisiana) High School and Coach at Thibodeaux (Louisiana) High School, winning Louisiana District Eight 4-A Coach of the Year in 1987.

He returned to MGCCC as assistant coach to Bob Weathers (1988-2002). During that time, the team won three South Division titles, two state titles and three National Junior College Athletic Association Region XXIII titles, and was ranked fourth in the nation in 1991 and fifth in the nation in 1993. He became head coach when his father retired in 2002, winning the 2007 South Division championship; 2009 Region 23 championship, advancing to the NJCAA tournament; and the 2011 and 2012 South Division and state championships.

Weathers retired from Gulf Coast in 2019 after 31 years on the coaching staff as head coach and an assistant. The teams had gone to 21 straight state tournaments when he stepped down, 16 more than the next closest streak. He had a 297-154 record as head coach.
