Jackson Wedgworth

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (2016-18) / Golf
Soso, Mississippi

Jackson Wedgeworth led Gulf Coast to its first NJCAA golf team national championship in 2018, capping off a splendid career that boasted 18 top-10 finishes and left his name peppered through the school record book. He was named to the Ping All-American Second Team as a sophomore after winning the Hubert Tucker Award for the lowest scoring average in MACJC events.

Wedgeworth came to Perk from Soso, Miss., and he announced his presence early by finishing tied for the third in the opening tournament of the year at the Wallace State Fall Invitational in Cullman, Ala. He was second at the first MACJC event of the season the following week at Wesson. Wedgeworth finished seventh at the MACJC Championship, where Gulf Coast was third, and tied for ninth at the NJCAA District. The Bulldogs were second there to send them to Mesa, Ariz., for the NJCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship.

At Longbow Golf Course, Wedgeworth fired an opening-round 66 to lead the field and help Gulf Coast take an eight-shot lead. The round remains tied for the ninth-lowest round for a Bulldog golfer since 2006. He followed that up with a 74 that left him in second behind teammate Colin Troxler as the Bulldogs maintained their margin.

An even-par 71 in the third round left him in second place, and Gulf Coast led by two shots over host Mesa. The Bulldogs couldn’t hold on in the final round, finishing second to Mesa by five shots. Wedgeworth was third, but he’d get to lift a trophy the following season.

He won the first MACJC tournament of the season by shooting 10-under in Raymond. He had five more top-five finishes that season and had four more in the top-10. Wedgeworth finished second at the MACJC Championship, where Gulf Coast was second. He tied for seventh at the District D Tournament, where the Bulldogs won by 13 shots for their 10th region/district title in 11 years.

At GlenLakes Golf Club in Foley, Ala., the Bulldogs finished the first round tied for second, two shots behind Tyler. Wedgeworth led the team with an even-par 72 that tied him for 10th. He shot 73 the next day as Gulf Coast wound up nine behind MACJC-rival Meridian in second place.

Wedgeworth helped lead the charge on the third day, one of three Bulldogs who finished in red numbers. His 2-under moved him into a tie for eighth, and he scorched the course in the fourth round when he shot 4-under. Gulf Coast surged from two behind Meridian at the start of the day to edge the Eagles by one for the school’s sixth overall national championship.

Wedgeworth earned NJCAA All-American First Team honors for the second straight year by finishing tied for third. He was also a semifinalist for the Jack Nicklaus National NJCAA Player of the Year Award. His national scoring rating by GolfStat was fifth.
