JoAnna Williams of Gulfport played for the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College women’s basketball team from 2002-2004. During that time, she was named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American and Mississippi Association of Community and Junior College (MACJC) Player of the Year.
During her freshman year, she averaged 18 points per game. She developed into a true team leader during the 2003-2004 season and led the team with 55 steals for a 3.9 average. She was also the season’s scoring leader with 349 total points for a 24.9 average and was third in rebounds with a 5.2 average.
Williams was selected for First-Team All-State and All-Regional and Second Team All-American during the 2003-2004 season. She played a vital role in the team (20-8) going to the state and regional playoffs leading scoring, rebounding, blocked shots, steals, field-goal percentage and free-throw percentage.
After leaving MGCCC, Williams played at the University of South Alabama, receiving a bachelor’s degree in 2006. During her senior year, on November 21, 2005, she led the Jags to victory over The University of Southern Mississippi (84-72), scoring a career high of 26 points for the game.
