Bio

Mike Wixon

Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College (1971-73) / Basketball
Pascagoula, Mississippi

Mike Wixon, a native of Natchez, started at Gulf Coast in 1971 as a basketball player.

Wixon was a part-time starter during his freshman year. He twice scored 17 points, and on Dec. 9, 1971, he beat Meridian with a last-second free throw to win 71-70.

In the 1972-1973 season, Wixon was a full-time starter and co-captain of the team.  His highest recorded score was twenty-two points against Co-Lin on February 15, 1973.

Wixon, who hit an average of 13 points a game during his career at Gulf Coast, was named All-State Honorable Mention, and he was picked for Outstanding Athletes of America.

After graduation in mid-1973, Wixon began a career in journalism in South Mississippi newspapers.  His contribution to Gulf Coast sports became as important in the realm of journalism than his years as a player.  He enjoyed a long relationship with the “Big 3” head coaches—Bob Weathers, Curly Farris, and George Sekul.  He wrote many stories about them and their teams for both the Mississippi Press of Pascagoula and the Sun Herald of Biloxi.
