Bio

Don Hammack became Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College's Sports Information Director in February 2015. He works in the Athletic Department where his duties include publicizing Bulldog athletics and other school events, information and accomplishments.

Hammack worked at the Sun Herald in Biloxi for about 17 years. He started in the sports department and his beats included the Mississippi Sea Wolves, the New Orleans Saints, Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Including his 18 months at the Mississippi Press in Pascagoula, he covered two Super Bowls, the NCAA basketball tournament, the College World Series, an ECHL championship and any number of high school, college and pro games.

During Hurricane Katrina, he worked as the Sun Herald's disaster blogger and was a key member of the team that helped the paper win the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. He was part of five-person byline on the main to A-1 story in the August 30, 2005, the day after the storm.

Hammack transitioned to news and business reporting, focusing on transportation issues following the storm. He eventually became the newspaper's online editor and worked as a senior copy editor and page designer.

Hammack graduated from Mississippi State University in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering. He served five years as an officer in the navy, including three as a nuclear-trained officer onboard the USS Grayling.

He is married to Carla Biasi and lives in Biloxi. He is a member of the Society for American Baseball Research and of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
