No. 20 Gulf Coast loses two to PRCC

PERKINSTON — No. 20 Mississippi Gulf Coast dropped a doubleheader to archirival Pearl River on Tuesday.

The Wildcats (15-5, 6-0 MACJC) held on for an 8-7 win in Game 1 and defeated the Bulldogs (15-9, 4-4) 10-4 in the second.

Gulf Coast returns to action Saturday when Holmes visits Ken "Curly" Farris Field. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.

The Bulldogs twice rallied from two run deficits in the opener, but couldn't make up all the ground the third time they fell behind.

Tyler Evans (So., D'Iberville/D'Iberville) had a third-inning sacrifice fly in the third, and Ian Goff (So., George County/George County) had a bases loaded walk in the fourth to tie the score at 2.

Matt Muhleisen (Fr., Holy Cross/Harvey, La.) had a two-run triple in the fifth to make it 4-4, but Pearl River erupted for four in the sixth.

The Bulldogs pulled back runs on an error and a two-run single by Logan McGrew (Fr., Sumrall/Sumrall), but could not get anything else across.

Goff, Muhleisen, Donald Stokes (R-Fr., Ocean Springs/Pascagoula) and Champ Davison (So., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) had two hits each. Ty Barnes (Fr., Petal/Petal) took the loss, allowing seven runs in five innings.

Evans went 3-for-4  with a double in the second game to extend his hit streak to 12 games. McGrew also doubled.

Josh Lewis (Fr., Theodore/Theodore) was charged with seven runs in 4.1 innings, but only three were earned. He struck out eight.
