Bulldogs lose twice at JC

Two last-inning rallies weren't enough Wednesday for Mississippi Gulf Coast, which lost twice to No. 7 Jones.

The Bulldogs scored three in the top of the ninth to tie the first game but lost 7-6. They scored twice in the seventh of the nightcap, but the rally fell short in a 6-3 loss.

Fisher Ray (So., George County/Bruce) tripled in a pair of runs with one out to cut the Bulldogs deficit to 6-5. Ike Williams (So., St. Martin/St. Martin) executed the squeeze bunt to tie it, but Gulf Coast couldn't push across the go-ahead run with the bases loaded following two walks.

Jones got three straight one-out singles in the bottom of the inning to win it.

Brandon Parker (So., West Harrison/Saucier) had a homer, and Miller Hancock (So., East Webster/Maben) had two hits.

Gulf Coast didn't manage a hit until the seventh inning of the second game, but Tanner Estill (So., Petal/Petal) delivered an RBI single to make it 6-2. Williams' grounder up the middle forced an error, and the Bulldogs trailed 6-3 with the tying run at the plate.

A strikeout and popup ended the rally.

Gulf Coast (23-13, 13-9 MACJC) returns to action Saturday when the Bulldogs travel to Northeast. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

Jones (31-7, 15-5) snapped MGCCC's four-game win streak.
