PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast is one of two undefeated teams in MACCC baseball action after another sweep Sunday.
The Bulldogs beat East Mississippi 11-7 and 9-2 in their conference home opener at Ken "Curly" Farris Field. They've won nine out of their last 10.
"They were complete team wins. We swung it well, pitched it well and played really good defense. I think that part is going unnoticed. Landon Holliman made four or five plays in the six-hole and made them look easy."
Kaden Irving (So, Gautier/Gautier) had a grand slam and five RBI to power the offense in the first game. Colby Wilson (So, Saucier/D'Iberville) had four hits, including a home run, in the second.
Aiden Seymour (So, D'Iberville/D'Iberville) threw seven innings of five-hit ball in the first game, striking out three to improve to 4-1. He got tons of run support, with Irving's big blast ending a six-run second.
"He's been working hard on controlling things," Allen said. "The game's gotten slowed down for him, and he's using all fields. The power's there; all he has to do is touch the baseball and it's gonna go."
The Bulldogs (20-8, 4-0 MACCC) led 11-1 at one point. Holliman and Jacob Palazzo (So, Biloxi/Gulfport) had two hits, and Jordan Davis had a two-run double.
James Vines (Fr, Clinton, La./Silliman Institute) started and threw six strong innings in the nightcap, striking out nine. He scattered six hits and walked two.
Wilson had a solo homer and a double among his four hits.
"He had a big game about two weeks ago, but he's been scuffling since then," Allen said. "We're still going to throw him out there because we trust him. He ambushed a fastball like we talked to him about. He got that first pitch there because pitchers don't want to get behind."
Brandon Coakley (Fr, Covington, La./Covington) and Dom Jackson (So, Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze) hit back-to-back solo homers. Jackson leads the MACCC with nine.
East Mississippi is now 14-10, 1-3.
Gulf Coast will be on the road Tuesday with a trip to Meridian. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
