Comeback Bulldogs run past JCJC
PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast found itself in a touch-and-go situation, down a goal with 17 minutes to play Tuesday.
It was a rare instance of early season adversity for the Bulldogs, but they scored four goals to blow past Jones County 5-2 at the new MGCCC Soccer Complex.
"We really haven't had a whole lot of that," Gulf Coast coach Chris Handy said. "I guess it's positive to see, but I hate we were down. You could tell they felt a little bit of danger there."
Jordan Hall (5-9, 163, Fr., Royton and Crompton/Manchester, England) scored twice and assisted on another to lead Gulf Coast (3-1, 2-0 MACJC South). Tylor Davis (6-0, 164, Fr., West Harrison/Gulfport) added a goal and an assist.
Gulf Coast returns to action Friday when Copiah-Lincoln visits Perkinston. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Hall set up the game's first goal, hustling back into play to make a tackle, winning the ball directly to Davis in the 52nd minute. Davis deposited it inside the far post for a 1-0 lead.
"We were told at halftime the pressure was nowhere near high enough," Hall said. "The workrate needed to improve. I closed him down, managed to get the tackle in. Tyler put it. Real nice."
The Bobcats (0-3, 0-2) got two goals from Joseph Todd in a six-minute span, making it 2-1 in the 72nd minute. They were the first goals the Bulldogs had allowed to MACJC opposition this season.
Hall tied it up with 14:44 to play, cleaning up his own rebound, then James Beattie (5-7, 155, So., Williamwood/Glasgow, Scotland) knifed a pass through the defense to find Hall.
"I was thinking about shooting, but then I saw Jordan running forward so I slipped him in," Beattie said. "I know he's going to score in a 1v1 situation."
Hall's fourth goal of the season, most on the team, gave Gulf Coast the lead again.
Davis followed with a cross to Jonathan Page (6-0, 151, Fr., West Harrison/Gulfport) for a 4-2 lead with just under five minute to play, and Dustin Bosch (5-11, 165, Fr., St. Stanislaus/Bay St. Louis) found Liam Eadsforth (5-11, 145, Fr., The Radclyffe School/Manchester, England) 30 seconds later for the final margin.
"We came through in the clutch," Hall said. "We played really well that last 17 minutes. It shows how good we can actually be. We put four goals in in 15 minutes. That killed the game. They couldn't get near us."
