PERKINSTON — No. 8 Mississippi Gulf Coast got another pitching gem from Kristen Cade against No. 15 Copiah-Lincoln, but the Lady Bulldogs' bats cooled in the second game to settle for a split.
Gulf Coast won the first game at Ross-Smith Field 8-0 in five innings before falling 5-2 in the second.
Cade threw a one-hitter, striking out nine and walking just one. She's 6-2 on the season.
The Lady Bulldogs (11-7, 3-1 MACJC) exploded for five runs in the fourth to break open a tight game. The first three base runners reached, but it took a string of two-out at-bats to start scoring runs.
Shelby Archer (Fr., Pearl River Central/Picayune) walked to drive in a run, and Katie Beth Williams drove in two with a single to center. Marsha' Hunt (Fr., Philadelphia/Philadelphia) singled to make it 5-0, and Williams stole home to make it 6-0.
Kayla Cade (Fr., Harrison Central/Saucier) hit her first college home run in the fifth, and Archer's RBI double ended it.
Williams drove in three runs with her two hits, and Kayla Cade also had two hits.
Gulf Coast fell behind 3-0 before Archer hit her eighth home run of the year to chop two runs off the deficit. The Bulldogs wouldn't get any closer, though, managing only five hits.
Co-Lin is now 12-2, 3-1.
Gulf Coast travels to Goodman on Saturday to play at Holmes. First pitch is set for noon.
