No. 2 MGCCC takes over 1st place

No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast took over sole possession of first place in the MACCC after a powerful sweep of Coahoma at Clarksdale on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs beat the Tigers 14-0 in four innings in the first game and 13-3 in the second.

Gulf Coast improves to 16-6 overall and is unbeaten in 12 conference games. No. 3 Copiah-Lincoln got swept by No. 6 Itawamba on Saturday, allowing the Bulldogs to jump atop the league standings.

They have a huge showdown against No. 8 Jones on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. in Ellisville, with the Bulldogs up by three games over the fourth-place Bobcats.

Gulf Coast coach Kenneth Long was able to empty his bench in the second game after the Bulldogs went up big.

"That second group works real hard in practice, and they deserve to get some playing time," he said.

A'Mya Stevens (So., Laurel/Northeast Jones) mowed down the Tigers (0-14, 0-12) in the first game. She allowed only one hit while striking out seven. Stevens didn't walk anybody.

"A'Mya came out and was real efficient the first game, and it went by fast," Long said. "She was getting ahead every batter. It was a good day."

K.K. Agner (Fr., Horn Lake/Magnolia Heights) continued her torrid pace with a 3-for-4 performance. She had a home run and four RBI.

Rakeya Travis (So., Poplarville/Poplarville) and Kristian Jones (Fr., Southaven/DeSoto Central) also homered, with Jones also getting a double among three hits to pick up three RBI.

Anna Avant (So., Water Valley/Water Valley) and Abby Vance (Fr., Calhoun City/Calhoun City) combined to limit the Tigers to five hits and three runs in the second game. Avant started and threw two no-hit innings.

She also doubled for the only extra-base hit for Gulf Coast in the second game. She had two hits coming off the bench, as did Aislynn Andrews (Fr., Poplarville/Poplarville), Layne Turan (Fr., Gulfport/West Harrison) and Alyssia Little (Fr., Brandon/Brandon).
