EUNICE, La. — No. 9 Mississippi Gulf Coast couldn't get the bats unleashed and the Bulldogs' defense let them down plenty, too, in an 8-1 loss to No. 8 Copiah-Lincoln.
The result knocked Gulf Coast out of the winners' bracket of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament and into a noon start Saturday against Northwest Mississippi.
"We weren't making plays like we should have on defense, which helped them score some of those runs," Gulf Coast coach Kenneth Long said. "Anna (Avant) threw well through the fifth innings, when they started hitting her and we didn't help her a whole lot. We've just got to regroup, put that behind us and play again tomorrow."
The Bulldogs (31-13) have to beat Northwest (20-17) in a losers' bracket game to advance to a second game Saturday at 6 p.m. The winner of the first game will play the loser of the Co-Lin game against No. 2 Jones at 3 p.m.
The Wolves-Bobcats winner will advance to Sunday's championship round, and the Bulldogs could join them with two wins Saturday.
"I told them if we dwell on this, it will hurt us tomorrow," Long said. "The best thing to do is just throw it in the trash and move on and be ready at 12 o'clock."
