Mississippi Gulf Coast lost two heartbreakers at No. 14 Itawamba on Thursday, twice losing on walk-off hits.
ICC scored twice in the seventh of the first game to win 5-4. In the second game, Gulf Coast scored four times in the seventh to tie it up, only to lose 8-7. then broke a tie in the final inning of the second game to win 5-4.
Gulf Coast falls to 19-13 overall, 2-4 in MACCC. Itawamba is now 17-6, 4-2
In the nightcap, Gulf Coast trailed 7-3 and was down to their final out with the bases loaded. Olivia Plummer (So., Gulfport/Gulfport) drew a walk, and another run scored on a passed ball. Chloe Litchfield (So., Enterprise/Enterprise) delivered a two-run single to make it 7-7.
Itawamba got a one-out single in the bottom of the inning to win.
Jorja Roberson (Fr., Branyan/East Union), Breanna Green (So., Saraland Ala./Saraland) had two hits for Gulf Coast, and Green had a two-run double.
Gulf Coast scored twice in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Laurel Ladner (So., Long Beach/Long Beach) had a single to drive the go-ahead run in with two outs.
A pair of errors extended the Itawamba seventh inning and allowed a tying run to score. Then, with two outs and bases loaded, K.K. Agner (So., Horn Lake/Magnolia Heights) dove to her left at short to spear what looked like a certain base hit up the middle. She flipped to second for the force, but the umpire signaled safe, allowing the winning run to score.
Green and Jett Harrell (Fr., Clarksdale/Lee Academy) had two hits, and Madisyn Cobbs (So., Oxford/Lafayette) had a double. Abby Vance (So., Calhoun City/Calhoun City) made just her second appearance of the season, went the distance and allowed only two earned runs.
Gulf Coast will travel to Southwest Mississippi on Tuesday. The doubleheader in Summit is set to start at 3 p.m.
