Bulldogs get big split at No. 8 Northwest

Mississippi Gulf Coast got its second split of the week against a top-10 nationally-ranked team Saturday, this time on the road at No. 8 Northwest Mississippi.

The Bulldogs bounced back from a 4-2 loss in the opener to win 6-3 in eight innings in Senatobia.

"The kids played well," Gulf Coast coach David Kuhn said. "We had a chance to win both games, and could have easily lost both. I'm proud of the way we played. This is a tough league every time out."

The Bulldogs are 30-15 overall and 11-9 in the MACCC, having won six of their last eight. They split with No. 3 Jones earlier in the week.

They led in both games and were up 3-0 in the second but saw the lead evaporate on a solo home run with one out in the seventh.

Instead of packing it up and calling it a day, the Bulldogs got a two-run double from Savannah Wilbanks (So., Southaven/DeSoto Central) and an RBI single from AB Parrish (So., Corinth/Alcorn Central).

"It was unreal," Kuhn said. "Savannah came through, the hometown kid returns and gets the big hit. AB stepped up big because we lost a couple players to injury. They were very resilient and didn't quit."

Olivia Falcon (So., St. Amant, La./St. Amant) came in and got the final out of the seventh and retired the side in order in the eighth to get the win. She's now 10-3.

Emma Thomson (So., Sulphur, La./Sulphur) gave Gulf Coast a 2-0 lead with a double in the first, and Caroline Batson (Fr., Wiggins/Stone) drove in another run with a single in the third.

Batson and Irina Sanford (So., Lucedale/George County) had two hits each.

Batson hit a homer in the first inning of the first game, and Sanford's single in the second made it 2-0.

The Rangers (32-8, 13-7) scored twice in the fifth and twice in the sixth to win.

Wilbanks had two hits, including a double.

The Bulldogs will play No. 14 Pearl River at Perk on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.

Gulf Coast will celebrate Sophomore Day on Thursday when Coahoma visits. First pitch at Ross-Smith Field is scheduled for 1 p.m., with ceremonies taking place after the first game.
