Lady Bulldogs lose to JC
PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast is still alive in its quest to make the playoffs for the first time since 2013, but the Lady Bulldogs suffered a setback Monday night against No. 4 Jones, losing 80-68.
Breannah McCullah (So., Edwards/Raymond) led Gulf Coast with 18 points. Kayla Simmons (Fr., Brandon/Brandon) and Shelli Thigpen (So., Wylie, Texas/Wylie) had 16 each.
The loss dropped the Lady Bulldogs (12-8, 8-5 MACJC South) into a three-way tie for third place with one game left in the regular season. They are tied with Pearl River, which entertains Meridian in its final game, and East Central, which travels to Southwest.
Those teams are a game behind Copiah-Lincoln, which travels to Elllisville on Thursday. The top four teams make the tournament.
Gulf Coast's final regular-season game is at Hinds in Utica on Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The tiebreaker scenarios are complicated, but it will likely be a must-win at Hinds.
The Lady Bulldogs, who saw a four-game win streak snapped, scored the first seven points of the game, but Jones stormed back to lead 21-18 after 10 minutes. The deficit was 12 at halftime, and Gulf Coast got it to five midway through the third period before Jones pulled away.
Jones improved to 20-2, 12-1. The Lady Bobcats will host the MACJC Tournament next week.
