Payne inflicts pain on Southwest

PERKINSTON — Paris Payne powered Mississippi Gulf Coast past Southwest with a hat trick Friday, helping the Lady Bulldogs win 6-1 in a game with a 90-minute lightning delay.

 

Gulf Coast improves to 2-2 overall, 2-1 MACJC South.

 

Payne (Fr., Southampton England/Saints Foundation) scored twice in the first five minutes, first from Chloe Fell (Fr., Bury England/Woodhey) and the second from Mikayla Martin (Fr., Gulfport/West Harrison).

 

Curissa Beatty (So., Biloxi/Biloxi) set up Kaitlyn Harwell (So., Wiggins/Stone) in the ninth minute for a 3-0 lead on the final touch before the delay.

 

When play resumed, Payne set up Harwell for a 4-0 lead completed her hat trick with 12 minutes left when Martin notched her second assist for the final score.

 

Southwest falls to 0-5, 0-2.

 

Gulf Coast returns to action Saturday when the Lady Bulldogs travel to Meridian for a noon kickoff.
