PERKINSTON — No. 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast got a mercy-rule win over visiting East Central on Tuesday at Bary Thrash Field, beating the Eagles 8-0.
The match was stopped after 70 minutes because of the eight-goal advantage. Linda Mustered (So., Biloxi/St. Patrick) scored a hat trick, and five other Bulldogs netted goals.
"I'm happy for the team," Gulf Coast coach Ryan Joiner said. "There were a lot of goal scorers tonight, and Linda gets the hat trick, which is good for her confidence. Tonight, we didn't want any goals in our net, so I'm happy for the shutout."
Gulf Coast, which moved up seven spots in the new NJCAA Division II women's soccer rankings on Monday, improved to 5-1 and stayed unbeaten in three MACCC contests. East Central is 2-5-1, 0-3.
Anna Katherine Thriffiley (Fr., Biloxi/St. Patrick) assisted on the first two goals, both scored by Mustered in the opening 18 minutes. It was a steady drumbeat of goals in the first 45 minutes, with Reagan Chancelor (Fr., Hattiesburg/Oak Grove), Nakiya Richardson (Fr., Gulfport/Biloxi), Josey Smith (So., Bay St. Louis/Hancock) and Libby Fraser (So., Cambridge, England/Hills Road College) getting on the scoresheet.
Smith also assisted on a goal, and Laylah Johnson (So., Gulfport/Gulfport), Hailey Moore (So., Biloxi/Biloxi) and Caroline Joergensen (Fr., Soenderborg, Denmark/Det Blaa Gymnaisum Soenderborg) also had helpers.
Anna Vincent (Fr., Meridian/West Lauderdale) had a second-half goal before Mustererd's third that closed out the scoring in the 59th minute.
It was the most goals since a 14-0 win over East Mississippi in 2023. Richardson, Smith and Vincent had memorable long-range goals in Tuesday's onslaught.
Kaylee Tardo (Fr., Madison/Germantown) stopped one shot for the shutout.
