No. 18 Gulf Coast cruises past Hinds

PERKINSTON — No. 18 Mississippi Gulf Coast won its fourth straight match to start the season, blanking an undermanned Hinds team 9-0 Saturday at the MGCCC Tennis Complex.

Hinds only brought five players, so Gulf Coast won the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles by walkovers.

In the matches that were played, however, the Bulldogs continued their strong play.

"I think the process from August to now, they're doing really well," Gulf Coast coach Gary Bourgeois said. "I think every match, they're discovering 'I can do things I've never done before.' The process is working. They're not looking at results, just the results, and that's fueling their success."

Krissy Georgieva (Fr., Epsom and Ewell High School/Sutton, England) and Noni Charlton won their No. 1 doubles match easily, and posted straight-set wins in their singles matches. Anna Stringer (Fr., Stone/Wiggins) and Kaylen Bond (Fr., Stone/Perkinston) didn't drop a game in No. 2 doubles play, and Bond carried that over to her No. 4 singles match.

Stringer had to rally at No. 3 singles, winning 3-6, 6-1, 10-6, while Tia Topps (Fr., Grenada/Grenada) dropped only one game in her No. 5 singles matchup.

Gulf Coast entertains Jones on Wednesday, Copiah-Lincoln on Wednesday and Meridian on Friday in a busy week, weather permitting. First serves in all the matches are set for 1 p.m.
