Lady Bulldogs net first victory

PERKINSTON – Mississippi Gulf Coast got its first women's soccer win of the season Tuesday over Copiah-Lincoln, picking up a 2-0 victory.

"It was good to get the W today," Lady Bulldogs interim head coach Jackie Rhodes said. "It was good to get our first win of the year. But I'm still a little disappointed in how we got the win. A win is a win, so we'll take it any day."

Rhodes thought there was plenty of room for improvement, with several missed chances leaving goals on the field and plenty of areas to get better across the field.

Madi Giese scored the opener for the Lady Bulldogs (1-4, 1-1 MACJC South) off a free kick in the 30th minute.

"I was probably 10 yards outside the 18(-yard box)," she said. "I was looking to get it on frame, and I thought if I placed it, I might get lucky."

Mariah Minnis got the Lady Bulldogs second goal, marking the first time the squad had multiple goals in a game. He goal came with less than five minutes to play.

"Jamie (Dufault) came down all the way to the corner and hit a big cross," Minnis said. "She actually shot it at the goal, off the goalie. It landed at my feet and I toed it in. It was a lucky shot."

Gulf Coast had other opportunities late against a tired group of Lady Wolves (0-3, 0-2), but couldn't convert.

"We've still got some thing to improve on," Rhodes said, "but we'll get there."

Gulf Coast returns to action Friday when the Lady Bulldogs travel to Jones. Kickoff is at 5 p.m.
