BILOXI – Mississippi Gulf Coast's struggling starting pitching bit the Bulldogs hard Saturday, as Kaskaskia took advantage of a slew of free passes on the way to a doubleheader sweep.
The Blue Devils (2-0) won 8-3 and 12-6 at MGM Park in Biloxi.
"It's been a big disappointment," Gulf Coast coach Rodney Batts said. "I thought they were going to be a strong suit for us. It just hasn't happened."
Gulf Coast (6-4) returns to action Wednesday with a doubleheader at Alabama Southern. The Bulldogs next visit to MGM Park is Saturday, March 5, when Baton Rouge visits.
The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. Tickets for this and all games at the home of the Biloxi Shuckers are available at http://mgcccbulldogs.com/MGMtix.
The Bulldogs starters Saturday combined to pitch four innings, allowing 15 runs on 11 hits while walking six.
"It's been that way all year," Batts said. "We've gotten two or three performances out of starters that have been quality ones; the other ones, we've haven't gotten much."
For the day, Gulf Coast pitchers walked 13 and hit four more.
In the opener, back-to-back homers in the third by Nick Frerichs and Chris Vazquez plated four runs to blow open a tight game.
Dylan Mills-Derouen (0-1) allowed six runs on five hits and three walks.
The Bulldogs had eight hits, but all were singles. Chase Rhodes had two of them, driving in a run in the fourth.
Michael Shubert had a first-inning single to give Gulf Coast a 1-0 lead.
Kaskaskia, which was one game away from the NJCAA Division I World Series last year, jumped out to a 4-0 in the first inning of the second game, but the Bulldogs got three right back.
Michael Shubert doubled in two runs, followed by a Brian Lane single to drive him in.
The Blue Devils plated five in the second and three more in the fourth to take control.
Shubert had a solo home run, and Lane drove in another run with a triple. Sam Taylor added a double, and Slater McCarty also had two hits.
Ethan Necaise (0-1) took the loss, allowing nine runs on six hits and three walks.
"I told them I'd take the blame for this," Batts said. "I didn't have them ready. We'll go back to work Monday."
