Travis, Fontaine named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — Rakeya Travis and Welsey Fontaine have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for Feb. 3-9.

Travis, a freshman from Poplarville, was a dominant player for No. 13 Gulf Coast in a 4-0 week, batting .857 with two homers and a triple. She went 6-for-7 in the four games, slugging 2.000 with a 2.923 OPS. Travis also handled eight chances at shortstop without an error.

Fontaine, a sophomore from Biloxi, picked up all four possible points in No. 19 Gulf Coast's two wins to open the tennis season. He teamed with Seth Macute to win both No. 2 doubles matches while dropping only three games, and won his No. 4 singles matches against East Central and Itawamba.

Also nominated:

Jayden McCorvey, a freshman swing player from Pascagoula, averaged 13.5 points and 5.5 rebounds for Gulf Coast. In a 58-56 win at Co-Lin, he had 10 points and 6 rebounds. He set a season-high with 17 points in a 70-63 loss at Southwest. He also had 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.

Noni Charlton, a freshman from Ipswich, England, won all four of her matches in No. 18 Gulf Coast's two wins to open the tennis season. She teamed with Krissy Georgieva to win both No. 1 doubles matches, and dropped only seven games while winning her two No. 2 singles matches in straight sets.

Kristen Cade, a sophomore from West Harrison, threw a one-hitter in her first game of the season to beat Dyersburg State 9-1 in six innings. She allowed a first-inning solo home run, and then nothing else that game. Cade struck out three batters in 1.2 innings of relief work in a 10-2 win over DSCC the next day.
