Shores, Roth named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — Briana Shores and Patrick Roth have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for Feb. 17-23.

Shores, a sophomore from Richland, tore up the Rush Invitational in Meridian, going 4-for-6 with two doubles each day. She drove in six runs total in a 14-2 win over Southeastern Illinois and a 4-2 win over Trinity Valley on Saturday, and four more in a 9-4 win over Parkland and a 5-1 win over No. 2 LSU Eunice.

Roth, a sophomore from Pascagoula, won both his matches during Gulf Coast's dominant 8-1 win over Meridian. He teamed with Reid Crow for the first time at No. 2 doubles to win 8-2, and he won his No. 3 singles match 6-2, 6-2.

Also nominated:

Anna Stringer, a freshman from Wiggins, won three of her four of her matches last week. She and Kaylen Bond beat Meridian and Central Alabama at No. 2 doubles, dropping just four games total. She also won at No. 4 singles against Central Alabama, 6-0, 6-1.

Kristen Cade, a sophomore from Harrison Central, dominated No. 2 LSU Eunice, helping No. 6 Gulf Coast defeat the Bengals 5-1 in the Rush Invitational in Meridian. She struck out 14 and didn't walk anyone, allowing just three hits. The day before, she pitched the final two innings in relief to pick up a save in a 4-2 win over Trinity Valley. She struck out four without a walk, allowing two hits.

Mia Goolsby, a freshman from Greenville, S.C., shot the lights out from the 3-point line last week while averaging 20.0 points. In a 71-59 loss at Jones, she was 3-for-4 from behind the arc on the way to 16 points and five rebounds. She shone even brighter on Sophomore Night in a 66-47 win over Hinds, nailing 6-of-9 for 24 points. She also had four rebounds and five steals. She shot 69.2 percent on 3-pointers.
