Welborn, Georgieva named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — Luke Welborn and Krissy Georgieva have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for Feb. 24-March 1.

Welborn, a freshman from Locust Grove, Ga., batted .500 during a 2-2 week for Mississippi Gulf Coast that saw him push his hit streak to seven. He went 2-for-4 in both halves of a doubleheader loss to Baton Rouge. He had a three-RBI double in a 5-3 win over Illinois Central, then went 2-for-3 in the second, a 5-2 victory.

Georgieva, a freshman from Sutton, England, got Gulf Coast's only point in an exhibition match against William Carey by teaming with Noni Charlton at No. 1 doubles. She took the Crusaders' No. 1 singles player to three sets, then won both her matches against Jones.

Also nominated:

Seth Macute, a freshman from Brisbane, Australia, won both his matches against Jones. He also was the only Bulldog to force his opponent to a third set against William Carey.

Dawson Hall, a sophomore from East Central, struck out five in five innings of work in a 5-3 over Illinois Central. He scattered four hits and walked just one.

Daphane White, a center from St. Martin, scored 18 points and had seven rebounds in Gulf Coast's lone game at the MACJC Tournament.
