MGCCC clinches playoff spot
PERKINSTON — A blizzard of Pearl River 3-pointers buried Mississippi Gulf Coast on Sophomore Night, with the Bulldogs losing 90-73 at the Weathers/Wentzell Center.
Despite the loss, Gulf Coast (15-7, 8-5 MACJC South) clinched a state tournament berth because Jones County lost at East Central. The Bulldogs' game at Southwest on Thursday night pits the third- and fourth-place teams in the division against each other. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:15.
The tournament will be played in Senatobia, with the men starting play Feb. 26.
LaRaymond Spivery (Fr, Lucedale/George County) led the Bulldogs with 21 points. Abdul Dial (So, West Palm Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman) had 14, with Keevon Oney (Fr, Gulfport/Gulfport) adding 12. Dedoch Chan had his streak of scoring 20-plus point snapped with an 11-point night.
PRCC's Brandon Cranford made nine 3's on his way to 29 points. He made five in the first half when the Wildcats built a lead as large as 16.
Gulf Coast narrowed it to 11 by halftime, then scored the first 10 points of the second half.
Crawford nailed a 3-pointer at the 17:19 mark to ignite a 24-7 run that put the game out of reach.
