Gulf Coast knocked out of MACCC Tourney

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast will not be playing in the MACCC Tournament next week.

The conference standings were readjusted after the Bulldogs' regular-season finale Thursday night, and the team wound up in a four-way tie for sixth place.

Earlier in the day, the NJCAA had ruled a team had to forfeit six games because of an eligibility paperwork issue. The MACCC learned after Thursday's games were completed the decision had been reversed. Gulf Coast lost 80-75 at East Mississippi to finish 8-6, and Jones' 78-63 win over Itawamba on Friday added the wrong team to the logjam.

Southwest won the first tiebreaker (head-to-head) to finish sixth. Hinds won a three-team tiebreaker (record against highest-seeded team) for seventh, and Jones won the head-to-head tiebreaker for eighth for having beaten Gulf Coast in December.

Gulf Coast will play in the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament, which starts with a play-in round Feb. 26. The Bulldogs probably won't play until the first round on Feb. 28. Seedings will be announced later.
