No. 7 MGCCC powers to sweep

No. 7 Mississippi Gulf Coast got big performances Friday from Jada White and Kaitlynn McGoey, propelling the Lady Bulldogs to a high-scoring sweep at East Mississippi.

Gulf Coast (10-6, 5-3 MACJC) won the first game 11-9 and completed the sweep with a 6-4 victory in Scooba. East Mississippi is 9-13, 5-3.

White (Fr, Philadelphia/Philadelphia) homered in each game and drove in five runs. McGoey drove in three runs with four hits, including a triple and a double.

Avery Sanders (Fr, E.D. White/Thibodaux, La.) helped dig herself out of a big hole in the first game after allowing a first-inning grand slam. She cut the deficit to 4-3 in the with a two-run home run.

McGoey had an RBI single to tie the game, and Madison Wall (Fr, East Central/Hurley) followed with a sacrifice fly for a 5-4 lead. Kaylynn Garrett (Fr, Oxford/Oxford, Ala.) followed with an RBI single before White's first home run made it 8-4.

Sanders added an important two-run double in the sixth that extended Gulf Coast's lead to 11-4. White also had an RBI single in the inning.

East Mississippi got two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh and got the tying run to the plate with two outs, but Sanders induced a fly ball to win it.

White hit a two-run homer in the first inning of the second game, and McGoey drove in two with a single in the next inning for a 4-0 lead.

Lauren Hall (Fr, Nettleton/Nettleton) had an RBI single in the third for a 5-3 lead.

McGoey should have had a home run of her own in the second game. She hit a ball over the center-field fence in the sixth that would have given the Gulf Coast a three-run lead, but she exchanged a high-five with a teammate before touching home plate and was called out.

Gulf Coast returns to action March 18 when the Lady Bulldogs play at Northwest. First pitch in Senatobia is at 1 p.m.
