No. 16 Mississippi Gulf Coast staged last-inning comebacks in both ends of a doubleheader at Northwest on Friday, but the Bulldogs couldn't close out either and lost twice.
Dylan Menhennett (So, Biloxi/Biloxi) hit a bases-loaded triple in the ninth inning of a 9-8 decision in Game 1, and Brandon Parker (Fr, West Harrison/Saucier) hit an MGCCC record-tying 19th home run to tie Game 2 in the top of the seventh before Gulf Coast lost 6-5.
Gulf Coast falls to 25-9, 9-7 MACJC. Northwest is 22-10, 12-6.
The Bulldogs trailed 9-5 headed into the last inning of the opener. Chase Fagan (R-So, Hancock/Poplarville) doubled, Castor Lee (Fr, Gulfport/Gulfport) singled and Ike Williams walked to set up Menhennett's big two-out hit. Gulf Coast couldn't get the tying run across.
Menhennett also had a double among his three hits. Lee had three hits, including a double. Fagan, Alden Davis (Fr, Pascagoula/Pascagoula) and Colby Cagle (So, West Harrison/Lizana) had a double and a single each. Cullan O'Shea (Fr, Mary G. Montgomery/Mobile, Ala.) drove in two runs.
In the nightcap, the Bulldogs trailed 5-3 entering the seventh. Davis tripled, the scored on a wild pitch with Parker at the plate. Parker blasted a 2-2 pitch over the center-field wall to tie it.
Northwest pushed across a run with nobody out in the bottom of the inning to win.
Williams had three hits in Game 2, and O'Shea had two.
Gulf Coast returns to action Wednesday when Jones County visits Perkinston. First pitch at Ken "Curly" Farris Field is set for 3 p.m.
