Jones win NJCAA honors
PERKINSTON — Hitting in a powerful Mississippi Gulf Coast that has taken the Bulldogs to the No. 2 ranking in NJCAA Division II, Kristian Jones has done more than carry her fair share of the load.
She was rewarded Wednesday when she received NJCAA Player of the Week honors. The freshman designated hitter/third baseman from Southaven batted .692 with three homers and 10 RBI in an unbeaten week for the No. 2 Bulldogs. Gulf Coast remains unbeaten in conference play, alone in first place.
"It means a lot to me because my teammates have been backing me up and encouraging me all thorough this season," Jones said. "They've helped me work hard. It means a lot, not just for me but for them as well."
Jones had two home runs, including the go-ahead grand slam in a comeback 19-18 win over East Central where she drove in six. She went 3-for-4 in a 7-6 victory in Game 2.
"She had a great week," Gulf Coast coach Kenneth Long said. "In the East Central game, I don't think we'd be in the game if it wasn't for that grand slam. She had hits other than that one, but that one was huge. We're just glad to have her on the field. She's doing a great job for us."
Jones had a homer and three RBI in a 14-0 win over Coahoma, then went 2-for-2 in a 13-3 win in the second contest.
She's won MACCC Player of the Week twice already this season.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to play at East Mississippi on Saturday.
