No. 2 MGCCC loses twice at No. 3 ICC

No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast fell out of first place in the MACCC for the first time this season Sunday, falling twice at No. 3 Itawamba in Fulton.

The Bulldogs couldn't bunch their hits in the first game, a 3-2 loss, and they made three errors in the first inning of the second on the way to an 8-3 loss.

Gulf Coast (22-10, 18-4 MACCC) dropped into third place behind ICC (29-5, 21-3) and No. 6 Copiah-Lincoln (24-4, 19-3). The Bulldogs travel to Meridian on Tuesday before a huge showdown with Co-Lin at Perk on Thursday.

K.K. Agner (Fr., Horn Lake/Magnolia Heights) staked MGCCC to a 1-0 lead with a first-inning RBI single, and Emaleigh Coates (Fr., Lucedale /George County) made it stand up till the fifth inning. Itawamba capitalized on a Gulf Coast error in a three-run inning.

Breanna Green (Fr., Saraland, Ala./Saraland) drove in a run with a two-out single in the sixth, but the Bulldogs made the third out at third base to end the rally.

Alexis Laughlin (So., Hurley/East Central) had her third single of the game with two outs in the seventh, but the Bulldogs couldn't find the tying run.

Coates threw a six-hitter and gave up only two earned runs to take the hard-luck loss.

Rakeya Travis (So., Poplarville/Poplarville) singled in a run in the first inning of the second game, but the Bulldogs defense opened the door to a four-run outburst in the bottom of the frame.

Travis had three hits, including a triple. Abby Vance (Fr., Calhoun City/Calhoun City) scattered nine hits, giving up only three earned runs.
