No. 2 MGCCC splits with Holmes

PERKINSTON — No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast scored early in Game 1 against Holmes, then not enough in Game 2 to get a split Monday at Ross-Smith Field.

The Bulldogs, which had moved up a spot in the NJCAA Division II rankings announced during the first game, won 4-1 before falling 9-5. They are 22-8 overall and 18-2 in the MACCC, still atop the league.

Gulf Coast scored three times in the first inning, once on a sacrifice fly by Kristian Jones (Fr., Southaven/DeSoto Central), again when Alexis Laughlin (So., Hurley/East Central) scampered home on a wild pitch and then on a double-steal that plated Rakeya Travis (So., Poplarville/Poplarville).

Travis picked up an RBI single in the third for the final 4-1 margin, and Emaleigh Coates (Fr., Lucedale /George County) picked up her second consecutive win by throwing a one-hitter. She struck out three and didn't allow an earned run.

Gulf Coast fell behind 3-0 after two innings in the second game, but tied it by the fifth. Whitley Tanner (Fr., Hurley/East Central) had an RBI single, and Sarah Brannan (So., Enterprise/Enterprise) followed with an RBI groundout in the fourth.

K.K. Agner (Fr., Horn Lake/Magnolia Heights) drove in the tying run in the fifth with a double.

Holmes, however, scored six in the sixth, and Travis' two-run homer in the seventh was all the Bulldogs could manage in response.
