The Mississippi Gulf Coast women's soccer team lost to a last-minute penalty awarded to No. 19 Jones County, falling 2-1 in Ellisville.
"I think they played hard and played really well," Lady Bulldogs coach Jackie Rhodes. "We're still battling some serious injuries up top. When we get everybody healthy, it will be a better matchup. It's just heartbreaking to lose with 20 seconds left on a PK."
Casey LaFontaine (So., Pass Christian/Pass Christian) got her first goal of the season for the Lady Bulldogs (2-2) in the 59th minute to open the scoring. She scored on a breakaway.
Jones equalized two minutes later, then pulled out the win in its first regular-season game.
"We tackled her," Rhodes said. "It was the right tackle. If we hadn't tackled her, she would have just had a free shot on goal at close range."
Gulf Coast will open its home MACJC South Division game Tuesday when archrival Pearl River visits the MGCCC Soccer Complex. Play starts at 5 p.m.
