Bulldogs notch 3rd straight win
PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast won its third straight volleyball match Monday, downing Northwest-Shoals 3-1 at Dantzler Arena.
"The first set they came out, and they knew what they were supposed to do," Gulf Coast coach Shayna Walsh said. "They knew what they were coming up against, and they dominated. I told them in the second set, you can't let up, you can't get complacent. We didn't really ever know what was coming over across the net, and we weren't being disciplined in the second set. They weren't playing good defense, but they figured it out."
The Bulldogs won 25-15, 25-27, 25-12, 25-23 and are 11-6. They have won four of the last five.
Gulf Coast led by as many as 14 in the first set and cruised. In the second, the Patriots (4-16) won eight of nine points to go up 16-10. The Bulldogs saved three set points and went up 25-24, but Northwest-Shoals won the final three points to even the match.
After an easy third set, Gulf Coast was up 20-16 in the fourth only to see the Patriots surge to a 22-21 lead. The Bulldogs were able to win four of the final five points for the match.
Cambell Herrington (Fr., Brandon/Brandon) had team-highs with 20 digs and four aces. Alexa Shinabery (Fr., Marion, Ark./Marion) led the Bulldogs with 12 kills and added 14 digs.
Lila Turner (Fr., Kiln/Hancock) had 21 assists, and Reese Sorrells (Fr., Picayune/Picayune), Malorie Gaughf (Fr., Gulfport/Harrison Central) and Mariah Hammond (Fr., Slidell, La./Northshore) had three blocks.
The Bulldogs are back in MACCC play Wednesday. They travel to Summit to take on Southwest Mississippi, and the match will be streamed at https://go.smccbears.tv/.
