No. 2 Bulldogs shooting for records

No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast is in position to make some new entries in the team record book this golf season, and the Bulldogs have a chance to win their seventh tournament of the season Monday and Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Another win in the East Central Spring Invitational would move the squad into a tie for the second-most wins in Gulf Coast history. The 2009-10 and 2011-12 squads are two behind the 2018-19 national championship squad, which had nine victories.

Coach Brad Thornton isn't worried about complacency among his golfers.

"I've got a really competitive group," he said. "Day in and day out, nobody on the team likes to lose. I think that competitiveness has done nothing but benefit us so far."

This is the fifth MACCC event of the year, and Gulf Coast has yet to lose one. The team will be playing the Oaks Course at Dancing Rabbit Golf Club because the Azaleas Course is undergoing some renovations. The Oaks plays at nearly 7,200 yards.

"It's a very good golf course," Thornton said. "It's championship quality, so it gives us a good test. The best team will come out winning. There's no gimmicks. You just have to golf your ball."

Chase Kaiser (So., Natchez/Cathedral) has three wins this season, tied for second in team history and two off the record. He's finished better than 95.4 percent of his 454 opponents, tops on that list. The team has beaten 68 of 75 opponents (90.7 percent), third best.

Gulf Coast will have two more regular-season tournaments, including the Meridian Spring Invitational in MACCC play, before the postseason starts.
